North Texas Math Literacy Symposium
Are you teaching adults who are studying for the GED® exam? Do you have students who lack sufficient math skills to succeed on tests, on the job, and/or in community college? THIS workshop will provide you with hands-on tools you can use with your students to help them improve their math skills now!
When studying algebra, students often ask “when are we going to use this?”. In this interactive workshop, algebraic thinking will be used to analyze common situations giving rise to a variety of instructional strategies that make algebra accessible from many entry points. In addition, the workshop will include specific tools for helping students master geometry, including measurements and use of the math formula page.
This full-day workshop is for anyone who works with adult learners, but especially for those who are helping adult learners MASTER MATH!
Cost to attend will be $10 per person; includes lunch and snacks and all workshop materials.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Heidi Schuler is the lead GED® instructor at the Chattahoochee Technical College in North Georgia. A featured speaker at the 2015 TALAE and Literacy Texas conferences, Heidi conducts professional development workshops for LINCS (Literacy Information and Communication System) and is a National Trainer for online courses.
Here’s how Heidi describes her approach to workshops: “Everything we will discuss and participate in...is something that can immediately be utilized come Monday morning in the classroom. This is not a session for passive participants who only want to sit in the back and listen. My students in the classroom are expected to fully participate in activities and so are my workshop attendees. I am highly sensitive to those who are intimidated by math and have found that the “I Do, We Do, You Do" approach works well, especially with the activities I enjoy delivering."
